Affirmative Action Debate: Affirmative action brought to our attention in the United States the unfairness in the hiring, college entrance and government contract practices. African Americans and other minorities were paying taxes but not getting the benefits. Now, affirmative action is NOT a quota, it allows for a very small percentage of spaces to be set aside for qualified individuals to assure that everyone is treated fairly. With affirmative action in California, the colleges had a small percentage of African American students, now without affirmative action they have all but disappeared, the highly qualified to the qualified. Many of their slots are being filled with foreigners.
